All pets can have accidents, but cat urine is definitely very strong. In any situation with urine accidents, it is always, of course, best to remove it right away. We will walk you through how to clean cat pee from the carpet.
Fresh Cat Urine
- Blot as much of the cat pee on the carpet as possible; do not rub
- Extract if possible. A wet/dry shop vac is great to have on hand when owning any pet, or a specific carpet spotter
- Mix 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap with 16 ounces of warm water and spray directly on the spot, careful not to oversaturate the area
- An alternative is to apply an enzymatic cleaner and use as directed and follow dwell time instructions for the best result for odor control
- Extract with a carpet spotter or a shop vac
We have a couple of other solutions you likely have in your cupboards at home that have proven how to remove cat pee from the carpet. White Vinegar and water mixed at a 1:1 ratio can be sprayed as an alternative. The acidity in the vinegar can actually help break down the urine stain and odor. You can allow this to dwell for just a few minutes, then blot or extract if possible.
Hydrogen Peroxide can further prevent odors coming from cat urine, and this can be applied after using the vinegar and water mixture. Hydrogen peroxide will help oxidize the area, and can be directly poured onto the urine stain. Careful not to completely flood the area, and allow to dwell for at least 5 minutes. Test a small area first to make sure there is no discoloration and the area being treated.
Baking soda also has odor eliminating properties. You will want to be sure the area baking soda is being applied to is completely dry, or else it will likely clump together and create another mess you will have to clean up! Spread thoroughly on the area being treated and allow to dwell for at least 20 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly. It may take a few passes before the great majority of baking soda is completely removed.
Old Cat Urine
If the carpeted surface appears clean and you can not figure out where the cat pee on carpet is coming from it may be below the surface. Using a black light to help identify spots may be your best bet before calling in a professional. If you are able to see spots, soak with an enzymatic spotter and use as directed.

Remove Cat Urine From Carpet – Prevention
Cats need 3 things to ensure they are using their litter box as they should. Privacy, cleanliness and comfort. Our feline friends need to have peace and quiet, and an area away from any commotion in order for them to eliminate where the litter box is.
They also need a clean and sanitary spot to go, their sense of smell is much stronger than ours, regular cleaning is an absolute must to ensure they are using their spot. Having the right size or a larger litter box can also encourage proper use to make their spot more comfortable.
Additional litter boxes may also be a great solution to ensure your has more areas to do their business. Applying “potty pads” Under their litter box, especially if on a carpeted surface can help prevent cat urine from overspray and reaching the carpet. Doing this will help the area smell better.
Retraining may also help as a reminder to your cat as to where they need to be going to do their business. This is definitely the case if they are kittens, older cats, and even if they are in a new environment. Show them where to go, and even throw in a treat when they go where they should be!
