How to Remove Stains From Carpet

Spills and accidents happen and we are here to help. There are a few common stains that can be removed just by using home remedies, or to hold you over until we are able to come out.

There is a general rule for all stains before we get into it. Blotting any sort of spill with a white towel is crucial. Specifically white, because colored towels may leave behind color or bleed into the carpet.

Blotting is important to lift as much of the spill as possible, reducing the possible size of the area that can leave behind a stain.

Another tip is to not add any sort of chemical that contains bleach. There are some carpet spotters that can be bought at a local store that may contain small amounts of bleach and will be strong enough to dye the carpet fibers.

Especially when making home remedies, it is strongly recommended to test a very small spot to ensure the carpet does not have an adverse action.

Coffee Stains

  • Blot with a clean white towel until almost dry
  • Create a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar and add just a teaspoon of soap
  • Spray area and let it sit for a few minutes, blot and repeat until the stain is gone
  •  Over the counter spotters may be available, test a small spot first and follow directions on the provided bottle

Pet Stains

  • Blot with a clean white towel until almost dry
  • Use a pet stain specific enzymatic cleaner and use as directed
  • A small carpet spotter should be at the ready to extract once the enzymatic solution has had the proper dwell time as directed

Pet stains need an enzymatic cleaner to release the stain and control the odor. Dwell time is generally needed to allow the enzymes to do their job at getting rid of the odors!

Blood Stains

  • Blot with a clean white towel until almost dry
  • Mix 2-3 teaspoons of dawn dish soap (or any grease fighting dish soap) and 12 ounces of cold water and spray until the area is saturated
  • Using a clean white towel blot the stains and repeat this process until gone
  • There are over the counter products that can help oxygenate and release the stain

Ink Stains

  • DO NOT BLOT until there is a solution at the ready!
  • Isopropyl Alcohol is generally available at your local store and will be the best option. If that isn’t available, nail polish remover or vinegar will be the best bet
  • Gently blot with a white towel, careful not to rub as that will spread the stain quickly.
  • Repeat until gone
